York Cafe, York Place, Clifton, Bristol

Our first EBCB guest review:

Various people have recommended the York Cafe in Bristol as worthy of a visit and my friend Chris was going through on his way to the Carling Cup Final, so I asked him to pay a visit. Here's his splendid contribution. Words and pictures by Chris Groom. (Only shame is; he managed to delete his exterior shot)

Situated in Clifton about a mile out of Bristol City Centre, York Café is a friendly spot for some EBCB. It¹s close to Bristol University and seems to get a mix of students and locals. The booths seat 6 so unless you¹re a small battalion of eaters be prepared to snuggle up with people you may not know.

A generous portion of chips. Crisp and golden on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Nice. The highlight of the EBCB however was undoubtedly the egg.

Cooked to perfection, the yolk was plump and sweet. The bacon tasty, the beans good, but as you can see by the beans to juice ratio they weren¹t Heinz.

Impressive extension on the sugar dispenser.

Other highlights include the red formica tables, the lime green laminated menu¹s, the spotted dick on the menu and a large fridge containing various items of chocolate confectionary and cans of coke just in case you get peckish on your way to wherever you¹re headed.

Classic Cafe Preservation Society update

There is a meeting tomorrow. 6.30 at the New Piccadilly. We've booked a couple of tables at the back. We've got quite a few people saying they're coming. But the more the merrier. Please come along.

If only it had been yesterday, then we could have taken credit for this.

Bar Bruno, Wardour Street, W1

I've done Bar Bruno before, but I was passing and couldn't resist trying out the egg, bacon, chips and beans. And I saw, and it was good. Crispy little chips and a triangular egg. Formidable! A big pile of bacon and a mass of beans with a splendid smear of juice up the side of the plate. And all piping hot.

It's a magnificent place. Tardis-like. Splendid location. Great graphics. Full on Italian banter at all times of the day and night.

A minimalist condiment approach. A touch of John Pawson.

Big fan of the high-up menu board. Love to watch people coming in unsure of what they want, peering up at the board, realising they can't really read it and they're keeping everyone waiting and ordering something random in a panic.

Superb green leathery seats - especially the one v one configuration. Perfect for solo paper reading.

Heaven.

OK.

The first Cafe Preservation Society meeting is going to be Friday 25th of Feb. About 6.30. At the New Piccadilly.

The plan is simply to get together and work out what we could/should/might actually do.

At the moment it's just me and Patrick but allcomers are welcome. If you're thinking of coming you could send me an email - that might be useful.
