Edinburgh - Newbiggin-by-the-Sea - Whitley Bay - Scarborough - Cleethorpes - London
Well, I was enjoying the driving and the seaside, but I was starting to get fed-up with the hotels. Then Anne called to say that Arthur fell off a climbing frame at nursery and got a small fracture in his arm, causing his inaugural trip to casualty. He's fine, but a bit gloomy. So I decided to head home. I might try and continue next week.
Great last day though, three absolutely fantastic cafes. And tons of these (which have no good generic name that I know of, they're not really 'rides', what should I be calling them?)
This is the Riviera in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea. A complete time-warp gem. Full of paraphenalia and atmosphere. Photos here.
This is the Rendezvous in Whitley Bay. Huge, gorgeous place with brilliant views. A marvelous refuge in the winter.
Then there's the Harbour Bar, this brilliant ice-creamery in Scarborough.
those kids toys cause me weird emotions. i was never really allowed to go on them as a kid and so they grew to be mythical in status. until i finally went on one and realised how boring they are.
then for a few years i worked in a café in a park in Sheffield and one of my duties was rolling out this sit on kids toy down three massive steps out on to the path. it had a really sinister tune which became even more depressing as each time it played it meant someone had put another 20 pence in to the machine.
and each 20 pence meant the machine was more heavy to drag back up the steps at the end of an exhausting day.
i genuinely loved working in that greasy spoon café but that bit was a bit tough for a weedy 18 year old like me at the time.
