I used to have this blog - 10,000 bands - the idea was to list the best single track ever by 10,000 different bands so that one could fill up an ipod with no repeats. Obviously a highly unrealistic goal. I stopped updating it in December 2004 but I remembered on the drive up to Manchester how much I enjoyed some of the debates in the comments. So it's back from the dumper. All comments and suggestions gratefully received.
Very good that.
No Martin Stephenson and the Daintees?

REM - Losing My Religion...what?
And no Johnny Cash.
Inconceivable.

Well, I was thinking of leaving REM off all together because they're so rubbish. I'm not sure they'd fit in my top 10,000 bands. But you can at least whistle Losing My Religion.
As for Johnny Cash - what would you suggest? I know it's probably heretical to you Cashanistas, but I've always been partial to Get Rhythm.
Posted by: russell | July 14, 2006 at 11:29 AM
No Who? Tricky to slim it down to one song - the early three minute pop masterpieces or the later 10 minute rock masterpieces? The version of Magic Bus on The Who Live at Leeds is brilliant, but I think I would plump for Sparks from Tommy. Or Won't Get Fooled Again. Or 5.15, from Quadrophenia.
Do you know what? Leave The Who out, it's too difficult. Put Sympathy for the Devil by the Stones in though.

REM rubbish. Are you trying to wind me up?
Upon inspection I appear to have filled up my ipod with 10,000 Johnny Cash songs.
Get Rhythm is a lovely choice. To understand the glory of where Cash ended up you need to understand where he began.
It also connects Cash to ABBA

Radiohead
Iggy Pop & Stooges
(I also love Mr.Cash...)

Russell ... I am 10,000% behind you on your view of REM. What a crock of crap. Surely they rate as one of the most over-rated bands EVER!
Hell, their one 'good' song was a cover of Tears For Fears 'Mad World' - how sad is that!
I am over the moon you've brought back the site - I used to check it out alot, and cause all sorts of debate going in the office. Infact, if memory serves me, it was one of these debates that led us to write a paper for MTV about how 'Brands could learn alot from Bands' ... because you rarely see people get so animated over Coke as they do over, say, Green Day, despite brands spending billions each year trying to get consumer loyalty.
Maybe you should do an alternative version ... 10,000 BANNED - where all the crap bands and songs live. Should keep the REM fans happy ... as they'll be mentioned loads there!

You REM haters are really mean.
Posted by: Colman | July 14, 2006 at 04:26 PM
Green is a decent album.
Whatever you think of REM, surely they make the top 1,000?
Posted by: Ben | July 14, 2006 at 04:30 PM
Everyone knows that my 'guns' aren't 'for show'...right?
Posted by: Colman | July 14, 2006 at 05:05 PM

Massive Attack added.

Jesus ... no Led Zep!!!
'Thank You' is the one that should be on the list .... and get rid of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' from Queen [it's too cliched] and shove on 'My Melancholy Blues' - magic stuff off their News Of The World Album.
Posted by: Rob @ Cynic | July 15, 2006 at 03:22 AM
I'm not having any 'too cliched, too obvious' arguements. If there's was only going to be one Queen song in the world it clearly has to be Bohemian Rhapsody.
I've never been able to bring myself to care that much about Led Zep so I'll have to take your advice, anyone got any other suggestions?
Posted by: russell | July 15, 2006 at 09:42 AM
is that the rob @ cynic who had a past life playing the guitar with the worst bands of the 80s?
