Went to see the H.A. Rothholz posters at the Margaret Howell shop. City Of Sound's already written about it better than I could but I was especially struck by the obviousness of the messages the posters were trying to convey - 'Fence All Openings' 'Buy Stamps In Books' 'Drivers Be Alert'.
Sorry about the bad picture, but this is a haunting reminder to tie your shoe-laces.
I very much like the stuff in Margaret Howell but they do seem to match the austerity of the product with a certain 50s chilliness in the quality of the service.
Cheers Russell - glad you liked it. You're right about the obviousness. That directness another sign of the times, perhaps. As for the MH staff - I've never experienced their chilliness, I must say. Always found them to be discreetly attentive, bright, knowledgeable about the clothes, incredibly helpful when asked. Generally the best service I've had in London. But maybe they're used to me skulking around now, apparently stalking shirts ...

For a moment I thought that Post Office poster was part of the current campaign to stop the impending demise of our PO network.
It kind of makes the nostalgic quality of the image a little more poignant.

Indeed very nice stuff, but prices more like 2050 than 1950, eh?
