It was Arthur's birthday party today. We started off with bowling, which I can highly recommend for 6 year olds (they have ramps to aim and roll the ball down). Thence to Russell Square for picnic. And we were lucky enough to discover a Punch and Judy show going on. You can't beat an English afternoon when it's sunny.

This is a little scene from 12 Angry Men. One of the jurors is an ad guy, and boy does he let everyone know. He's like a one man urban spam operation. In some ways he's the personification of interruptive marketing. Pleased with himself, oblivious to others yet simultaneously desperate to entertain and mad for approval. And, I wonder, is this the origin of 'run it up the flagpole and see who salutes it'? Was it invented for the movie? (an exaggeration of a pre-existing phrase) Or was it already popular currency in Madison Avenue?

On my recent trip to Portland I spoke with Sudeep in Byways and Regan Dekoning at Red Star. Regan was a recruitment person at Wieden + Kennedy in Portland for many years and she's recently left to start her own head-hunting business. She's placing a lot of planners at the moment and she offers some really good advice, especially for junior people, on how to do a resume, do an interview and get a job.
She's one of the smartest and nicest people you could ever hope to meet and her guidance seems really sound to me. If you're looking for recruitment help she gives her contact details at the end of the audio. It's about 11 minutes and about 11MB.
I don't seem to have a picture of Redstar so that's a picture of a red star, from National Geographic.
