I've written about it before, but I've got to mention WriteRoom again because I love it. It's a minimal, distraction-free space for when you really have to get something written. I use it for doing my Campaign articles. Partly because when something sits nicely in the middle of the screen like that I know it's about the right length. (You'll notice I can't bear to be completely distraction free, the iTunes button still hovers in the corner.) WriteRoom is for Macs. There's also DarkRoom for Windows.
Blimey Russell,
Talk about a Zen writing tool.
I just downloaded this and I'm absolutely captivated by it.
(Wonder if this is the first application written by psychologists, who've studied writers?)
Haven't quite figured out the preferences yet, and find the flashing block cursor at the end of every line written, something of a bully, urging me to write some more.
But the uncluttered clarity it encourages with just you, the words on screen and keyboard to hand is very, very interesting.
Very nice.
Have a good weekend,
Mike.
ps. Can't figure out though if this tool is; Very un-2.0, very 2.0, or just very, and beautifully, retro.
Probably a bit of them all.

I love this trend back to full screen editing. Other apps, such the Copywrite by Bartas Technologies have full screen modes.
BUT Writeroon has something none of the others have - you can invoke WriteRoom in any cocoa application. Go to the Edit menu, and there should be a new menu item at the bottom - Edit in WriteRoom. So I am writing this comment in my RSS reader (Vienna) but actually writing it in WriteRoom. Just click command-s to save and command-w to close. Completely brilliant.
Nick
PS Just spend the last hour or so reading your blog - fantastic
